Communities

Heritage communities are groups of people representing a specific culture or geographical area, or that connect to certain heritage for intrinsic reasons. On this platform, a community can make lists of objects and records that are meaningful to them, and provide them with context and perspectives. The option to make a community is a direct response to the wishes expressed in an international user workshop for this platform. Since the workshop also brought forward the wish to have multiple perspectives coexist on the platform, a community is not an all-encompassing claim to representation, but rather an inclusive collaborative effort.

Community of SHARING STORIES ON CONTESTED HISTORIES | 2025

Community of SHARING STORIES ON CONTESTED HISTORIES | 2025 How are we - museum professionals around the world - dealing with colonial collections? How do we critically engage with the museum’s own histories and reflect on their role in society in the face of these challenges? How can we handle collections created and collected during colonial times in more caring and ethical ways? How do we navigate and react to contestations over certain histories and heritage? This knowledge exchange programme brings together a group of young professionals from around the world working in museums or collection-managing organisations to reflect on these questions and to exchange knowledge and experiences regarding their working practices.

Community of RECONCILE

RECONCILE (REthinking COmmunities, Narratives and Collections through Inclusive Learning and Exchange) is a research initiative focused on addressing the imbalances between former colonial powers and formerly colonised countries in heritage, archives, and academia. It emphasises the need for comprehensive decolonisation that goes beyond restitution, engaging local communities as co-creators of knowledge and fostering reciprocal learning. By connecting European, South African, and Indonesian institutions, RECONCILE aims to transform institutional narratives and practices, promote equitable partnerships, and centre indigenous knowledge systems.
